How to Properly Clean Your Dental Implants

by Dr. Christiana Onisiforou – Prosthodontist

Many people believe that once they have a dental implant, they no longer need to worry about oral hygiene. However, without proper maintenance, implants can be susceptible to bone loss, infections, and even implant failure. Keeping your implants clean is essential for their longevity and your overall oral health.

Brushing Correctly

Brushing dental implants requires proper technique to avoid damage and ensure effective cleaning.

  • Use a Soft-Bristled Brush: Whether manual or electric, a soft-bristled toothbrush is best to prevent damage to gums and implant surfaces.
  • Avoid a Back-and-Forth Motion: Sawing motions can be too abrasive and ineffective at cleaning between teeth. Instead, hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle at the gumline and use gentle circular motions.
  • Brush Twice Daily: Brushing in the morning removes overnight bacteria, while brushing before bed eliminates food particles and plaque buildup from the day.
  • Choose the Right Toothpaste: Avoid toothpaste with harsh abrasives, such as baking soda, which can wear down acrylic or damage the glaze on porcelain implant crowns.
  • Use an Angled or Interdental Brush: These brushes help clean below the implant crown and hard-to-reach areas, reducing the risk of peri-implantitis.

Flossing around Implants

Flossing is just as important as brushing for keeping your implants healthy.

  • Use Specialized Implant Floss: Crown and bridge floss is designed for implants, with rigid ends that allow easy insertion under the gumline.
  • Try a Water Flosser: Water flossers, like Waterpik, effectively remove plaque and bacteria from around the implants and gum tissue. They are especially useful for patients who struggle with traditional floss.
  • Consult Your Dentist: If you are unsure about how to floss properly, ask your dentist for a step-by-step demonstration to ensure you are cleaning your implants effectively.

Additional Tips for Implant Care

  • Use Antibacterial Mouthwash: A non-alcoholic antibacterial rinse can help reduce bacteria around implants.
  • Regular Dental Checkups: Schedule routine visits with your dentist to monitor implant health and address any concerns early.
  • Avoid Smoking and Sugary Foods: These increase the risk of infections and implant failure.

By following these steps, you can maintain the health and longevity of your dental implants, ensuring a confident and healthy smile for years to come.
