Bone Grafting Before Dental Implants?

by Dr. Nicos Onisiforou – Periodontist, Prosthodontist

Dental implants have become the gold standard for replacing missing teeth, but not every patient is ready for them right away. One of the most common preparatory procedures is bone grafting. If you’ve been told you may need one, don’t worry, this is a safe, predictable procedure that helps lay the foundation for a strong, lasting implant.

At ‘Dr. Onisiforou – Art of Advanced Dentistry’, we believe in educating our patients so they can make confident, informed decisions. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure that rebuilds or adds bone to your jaw, often to prepare the area for a dental implant. A strong, healthy jawbone is essential because implants must fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration to stay stable and last long-term.

When is Bone Grafting Necessary?

You may need bone grafting before implants if:

  • You’ve been missing a tooth for a long time: Jawbone naturally shrinks (resorbs) when it’s not supporting a tooth.
  • You’ve had gum disease: Periodontal disease can lead to bone loss around teeth and in the jaw.
  • You’ve had trauma or injury to the jaw: Accidents can cause bone fractures or loss.
  • Your sinus cavity is too close to the upper jaw: A procedure called a sinus lift (a type of bone graft) may be needed to create space for implants in the upper molar region.

Types of Bone Graft

Depending on your situation, we may recommend:

  • Socket graft: Immediately after tooth extraction to preserve the socket
  • Ridge augmentation: To rebuild the natural shape of your jaw
  • Sinus lift: To raise the sinus floor and add bone in the upper jaw
  • Block graft: For larger defects, using a block of bone

We use biocompatible grafting materials, including synthetic or processed human bone, depending on your needs and preferences.

Healing Time and What to Expect

Bone graft healing typically takes 3–6 months, depending on the size of the graft and your overall health. Once healed, we’ll reassess the area to ensure it’s ready for implant placement.

Do All Implant Patients Need a Bone Graft?

Not at all. Many patients have sufficient bone and can proceed straight to implants. That’s why a detailed consultation and 3D imaging (CBCT) are so important—we’ll assess the volume and density of your jawbone and create a personalized plan.

If you’ve been told you may need bone grafting, or if you’re just starting to explore dental implants, we’re here to help.
